Objectives :

To understand and know how to use the various theoretical approaches related to sustainability of livestock production systems.
To understand and use sustainability assessment tools (multi-criteria evaluation)
To implement knowledge and skills of livestock production system sustainability using 1 example of an existing animal product.

Contents :

Lectures (CM) (4 hrs) The concept of sustainability
Lectures (CM) (2 hrs) Dynamics of livestock production systems (Flexibility, resiliency)
Seminars (TD) (2 hrs) Reading articles
Seminars (TD) (2 hrs) Start-up of group collaborative work "sustainability of 2 livestock value chains"
Seminars (TD) (4 hrs) in group: Farming field trips + value chain representative intervenes as guest speaker
Lecture (4 hrs) Assessment tools for sustainability, multi-criteria approach
Seminars (TD) (4 hrs) Become familiar with the use of multi-criteria evaluation tools

Prerequisites :

General zootechnology / Animal physiology / Animal pathology

Teaching methods :

Lectures (CM), Seminars (TD) on handling and using tools, group work (preparation of field trips and debriefings)
Farm Field Trip

Assessment :

- Critical analysis of a scientific article
- Oral debriefing/presentation of results for group work in the presence of professors / outside guest speakers / professionals from the value chain (4 hrs)

The 1st year of Master of Science in Engineering includes common core courses, majors and inter-major courses.

• Food processing, food science, nutrition and quality (TAQ)
• Crop production and agroecology (PVA)
• Environmental and sustainable Engineering (IED)
• Animal production: livestock farming and livestock industry (PA)
• Business management, corporate consultancy and international trade and Markets (PCE/CMI)

Common core courses (CC) are engineering tools and Social Sciences. All of them are compulsory.

Inter-major modules (MIM): students will choose only one according to their major
